What is Adventure Racing?
Adventure racing is the new
endurance sport of the millenium. Just as the 1970's
brought the marathon and the 1980s the Ironman Triathlon,
the 1990s bring us adventure racing.
The sport consists
of a series of consecutive outdoor endurance challenges
(running, biking, paddling, etc) that require coed
teams to navigate an unmarked course from start
to finish. Race routes are designated by checkpoint
coordinates that racers must plot on a map and then
locate during the race. Checkpoints are kept secret
until just before race time. Teams are required
to combine physical endurance, psychological toughness,
outdoor savy, and athletic skill across a variety
of disciplines. While solid fitness is a prerequisite,
successful adventure racers are those with the ability
to contend with rigors of nonstop racing including,
sleep deprivation, unpredictable weather, blisters,
and general fatigue.
