Great first-time AR Events
Hi-Tech Adventure Races: 3 to 5 hour challenges that include mountain biking, canoeing, trail running, orienteering, and other mystery events. This national series of races includes events in CT and NY, as well as around the country. Check out www.mesp.com for more information. http://www.mesp.com
Vermont Adventure Games "Sugarbush Triathlon": One of the world's only "four-event" triathalons. Race includes a 5 mile run near Waitsfield, VT, a 6 mile paddle on the Mad River, a 12 mile bike, and a 2.5 mile cross country ski. Held in early April each year, the race includes team entries where participants select to do one or more of the events, or "ironman" category which requires competitors to complete all four events.. More Challenging AR Events
New Hampshire Adventure Games "Son of Inferno Pentathalon": A great five-sport event in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, held each spring. Event includes a 7 mile road run in North Conway, a 6 mile paddle down the Saco River, and 18 mile uphill bike climb to Pinkham Notch, a 2.4 mile hike up the Tuckerman's Ravine Trail, and a final ascent & descent with skis/snowboard in Tuckerman's Ravine. Sea2Summit Adventure Racing: A great weekend adventure that include two or three days of competition (generally 6 to 8 hours each). This race is held as individual day-long stages in venues such as British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and elsewhere. Check http://www.sea2summit.com
Adventure Extreme: A series of one-day, 6 to 8 hour races held in Colorado and Utah (Moab, Durango, Breckenridge, and Vail). These are great races to challenge first timers or high-speed "sprint" adventure racers/ Check http://www.gravityplay.com
New England Adventure Racing Series: A new series of 12 and 24 hour events at Mt. Snow (VT), Wildcat Mountain (NH), and Sunday River (ME). Directed by experienced adventure racers, Tracyn and Norm of RacingAhead.com, these races will combine challenging navigation with biking, running, and flatwater paddling. Raid the North Adventure Racing Series: A series of 48-hour and multi-day events that combine a variety of disciplines including mountain biking, trekking, navigation, paddling, etc. Check http://www.raidthenorth.com
Odyssey Adventure Racing Series: A series of 24 and 48 hour races in West Virginia, including the infamous Endorphin Fix. Well-established race series with a number of events each year, from spring through fall. Check http://www.oarevents.com
Extreme Adventures
Raid Gauloises: The original adventure race, which started in 1998 in New Zealand, this international 7 to 10 day nonstop race challenges the most fit teams in the world (Nevermind that it's sponsored by a French Cigarette Company!). Southern Traverse: An exciting 5 to 7 day race located in New Zealand in November of each year. Course traverses the South Island, while conquering mountain ridges, glacial landscapes, and long, open-paddles. Check http://www.southerntraverse.com
The Appalachian Extreme Adventure Race (AEAR): This multi-day race is held annually in Maine and covers up to 225 miles of non-stop trekking, biking, navigating, and canoeing. Check out www.racingahead.com for information about the 2003 race. http://www.racingahead.com
Odyssey's Megadose: This multi-day event includes a mountain marathon trail run, a hilly mountain bike section and class III whitewater paddle in West Virginia. Race format allows for solo or team entries. Check http://www.oarevents.com
Ecochallenge: Generally the most recognizable name in adventure racing. Race venue changes annually and may consist of horseback riding, outrigger canoes, jungle treks, and other unpredictable events. Check http://www.ecochallenge.com
