Scott Cole & Team ATP place 5th in "Saddle and Paddle" Race

Team ATP first to finish the course, but places 5th after controversial rule-making

April 13, 2003. Team ATP, comprised of Adirondack racers Scott Pleban and Michelle Barnes, invited Scott Cole to replace an injured teammate and race under the name Team ATP. The 2003 "Saddle and Paddle" was an 8 hour "sprint" race through Eastern Pennsylvannia. The race included navigation and trekking (read: bushwacking!), mountain biking, paddling, a suspended rope traverse across Blue March Lake, and waist-deep water crossings. ATP jumped out to an early lead, thanks to Scott Pleban's excellent navigation, but before long found themselves in 10th place after suffering a couple of major bike mechanicals (two broken chains). ATP hastily repaired the chains enough to get them to the next transition area. A couple of strategic decisions later, including a well-executed two-mile canoe portage, brought ATP back into the lead heading into the final leg: a 15-mile mountain bike. Despite finishing 1st, ATP suffered a "post facto" ruling by race officials that dropped them to 5th place. Read Scott Cole's Race report to get the full scoop.
